No Walmart In Remington

When: March 14th, 2010 - August 31st, 2010

Remington

205 West 25th Street
Baltimore, MD 21211
The 25th Street Station, as it is now called, is a proposed shopping center development project at the corner of Howard & 25th Streets, the current location of Anderson Automotive. Bruce Mortimer, one of the family members who owns Anderson, said that they have decided to leave the site after GM went bankrupt and will no longer offer cars for sale there.

WV Urban Develoment, LLC, the developers for the project, began discussing plans for the 25th Street Station with community members in December. A multi-store center planned for the site was to include a Lowes, Marshals, Staples, Anna's Linens and a grocery store. As the plan was revealed, immediate concerns were raised by residents regarding traffic, parking, the overall integration of the center into the neighborhood and safety for pedestrians. The developer presented a schematic showing shops facing mostly inward, creating a complex walling off the exterior and enclosing the shoppers.

In mid-February, Baltimore Heritage, Inc. a citywide, nonprofit historic and architectural preservation organization, brought to community's attention a 19th century stone historic church on 24th street that appeared to be demolished as part of the creation of the shopping center. Additional concerns mounted from the proposed bulldozing of the church including questions about the developer's ability to respectfully reconcile the complex issues that a giant retailer would create in the area.

In late February, a surprise announcement came announcement from Wal-Mart, stating that it would be joining the project, and shocked the community. Residents were awaiting notification regarding the grocery store that would be part of the development, not a Wal-Mart. The announcement has left residents feeling duped by the developers and there is great sentiment that the project, as it stands, is a poor fit for the area.
